There's a series called "Pendragon: A Journal Of An Adventure Through Time And Space" by D.J. MacHale. The first two are roughly 385 pages, the third 330, the fourth 375, the fifth through seventh are about 400-460 pages. It's complicated to explain, but if you search for Pendragon on the web, you should find it interesting enough.

Harry Potter, King Fortis the Brave, Eragon and Chronicles of Narnia.

Of the four, King Fortis the Brave would probably appeal the most to a 12-year-old girl. It has two very strong female characters that you could easily identify with and is full of action and humor that will keep you turning the pages. Then, probably Chronicles of Narnia. It has some strong female characters as well, but they can be overshadowed by the male characters. Harry Potter and Eragon are both heavy with the male characters, but still really good reads.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is not for 12 yr. olds, but it is good. Save it to read in about 3-4 years!
Anything by Madeleine L'Engle is very good. Start with "A Wrinkle in Time."
My 12 yr old started reading her books and keeps going to the library to find more. They have adventure, romance, and some science fiction. Also most of them are in paperback and not terribly long.
Harry Potter is also great reading, and it is about teens.

There's the sweet valley twins series (twins in 6th grade) all about girls and the sweet valley junior high (same characters, 8th grade). they're a huge series but the books are really interesting (about 150 pages each book).

Also, some good books are "Running out of time" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, "Stepping on the cracks", and "The thief lord" by Cornelia Funke.

First, I comment you on wanting to read and actual book. The Babysitters club was great, Sweet Valley High, there is one series about four friends, Katie, Sabrina, Randy and I Allison, Maybe the series is "Girl Talk" RL Stien are always good. The Diary of Ann Frank is sad, but very good. I read it when I was 10 and it has always affected me.

One book I really enjoyed was How My Private, Personal, Journal Became A Bestseller by Julia DeVillers (2004). Amazon lists it at 224 pages.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-9. Fourteen-year-old Jamie is tired of feeling insecure: at home she's barraged with media images of physically flawless young women; at school, she's hassled by a gang of catty, manicured classmates. Venting her frustrations in her diary, she chronicles the adventures of invented superhero Isabella (IS) who, with her signature wrist flick, sends "positivity rays" that destroy her nemesis, Myrna, and her "evil clique of Populars." Through a wild chain of events, Jamie's IS stories become a published best-seller, and Jamie becomes a teen celebrity. DeVillers' frothy, humorous first novel is a giddy fairy tale, written in a combination of diary excerpts, instant messages, and Jamie's spot-on narration. Readers may wish that the novel contained more of the actual IS story that inspires such uproar, but they'll enjoy joining Jamie as she experiences both highs and lows, copes with fame and fortune, and tries to maintain her IS-like sense of self-empowerment. Recommend this to Meg Cabot fans, as well as aspiring authors, who might also enjoy Andrew Clements' The School Story (2001). Gillian Engberg

Have you read any Meg Cabot? She's written so many YA books...and she does have a loyal fan base. She is probably best known for the Princess Diaries series.

I've also heard good things about a book called Click Here by Denise Vega. (225 pages)
