okay i have tumbled for like all my life and when i got around age.. 12 i quit because i was doing a back handspring and i fell on my head and sprained my wrist and my mom didn't really want me to do it anymore. then i decided to start doing it again and i still have my back handpsring but i have this huge fear of throwing it and my instructor says i'm going through a stage that everyone does at some point. he says i just need to trust him, and that he will be there and won't let me fall, but i just can't. i know i have it, and i know he's there, but i just can't do it. i need suggestions on how i could maybe get over my fear. has anyone else been through this? btw i'm fifteen now, so it's been a while since i've tumbled.

It is all on you. You either trust your instructor or you don't. I am sure he wouldn't let you get hurt without intervening to stop it from happening.

I've been doing gymnastics for like 12 years and I'm just turning 14. The same thing happened to me but on beam. I was doing a walkover handspring and both my hands missed. I fell on my face and got a bloody nose. After that, we didn't have practice for a week and then I hurt my foot so I couldn't do beam. When I started doing them again with a spot, I would think to myself "straight arms." I would squeeze my arms as tight as I could because I knew that if I did, there was no way I could fall on my face again. I can now do a handstand handspring again. Also, whenever I do a new skill, I know that my coaches will be there and will save me if I fall. For a handspring, I would try it on a tumble track or trampoline first with a spot. If you can do that, then try it on floor with a spot. Just remember to keep your arms straight. If you do that there is no way you can land on your head again. Also, you just have to go for the first one. After the first one you can say, "Okay, I did the first one, now I will do the same thing but better." I can't guarantee that the first one will be great because I know how first skills end up looking like. But the second and third ones will be a lot better because you know you can do it because you just did it!

What you need to do is take it a little bit at a time. Don't immediatly go the whole way, but figure out a way to break it down into steps. I had a bad fall off my horse a few years back and I couldn't get on one for awhile cause I was just too scared. My teacher helped me break it down. I started out just going in the stable. Then feeding the horse. Then grooming. Saddling. Putting 1 foot in the stirrup. Jumping, but not all the way over. Getting on and just sitting. Getting on and walking. And so on and so on. So just find a way to break it down and you'll be fine. Now I'm back in shows and getting 1st places!

I think you should try it. Once you get back into your groove, you will forget about your fall. Everything will be okay. If you start feeling uncomfortable again with yourself after trying it, maybe you can try something else like competitive cheerleading or something. You can do anything you set your mind to. If you have faith in God, he will not let you fall.
