I'm broke so I can't afford to pay professionals. I know to keep it upright and to strap it and pad it in the truck. But I've heard it's best to roll pianos. Unfortunately, I've got two small flights of stairs to go down and up on each end - what's the best way to handle this safely?

Rent a piano dolly and cart (a wheeled platform).

It's really, really worth it to have professionals do it. They'll put much less stress on the soundboard, and you're much less likely to have to hire a piano tuner after the move.

The best way to handle moving your piano safely is by finding the passion to find a way to pay professional movers to handle your upright, so you won't be uptight at night because you didn't do right by your upright.

Call a music store that sells pianos and ask. I personally would not try this, if it slips, it is heavy enough to go through the wall. And then there is the "Hernia " factor. Did you check to see how much it would be to have someone only move that one piece?
