If you have some favorite music you can bring on a an ipod/discman/walkman/etc, that will help to pass the time.
Another thing you can do is play trip bingo - before you go, make a list of things you might see on your trip. Make the list as specific as you want - instead of saying animals, you could put the kind of animal. During the trip, look for those things and cross them off the list.
One thing that I remember my parents doing is a license plate game - actually there were two games. One game was to look for out of state license plates and the second game was to make "mini" sentences out of the letters on the license plates. The funnier, the better. If you find one that has a letter you can use for a name of someone you know (even yourself), that's a good one to do.
Another game we did on our trips is the picnic game - you say "I'm going on a picnic and I'm going to bring" and you say something with the letter A, the next person has to say the same thing and add something starting with B, the next person says the same thing with A and B and adds C and on and on until you're repeating an entire alphabet worth of things. It doesn't have to be things you'd really take on a picnic. It can be anything you want to take.
Have a great trip

I have traveled from Dallas to SA and it doesn't take that long to get there (appx 4 hrs) then again if you make pit stops & so on, guess a little longer and just the rate you are going. Anyways, do some crossword puzzles, watch the DVD's ,listen to CD's..or better yet go to sleep for a bit and by the time you know it, your there! Have fun!

Instead of using a laptop to watch a movie, I would highly suggest getting a portable DVD player. Laptops can easily over heat, if used over a long period of time, especially in a car.
Other things I would suggest, bring something to read. My kid brother always plays his Nintendo ds for long car trips. If you have an ipod, those are nice things to have for long car rides.

Bring a camera and take pictures. Do a photo journal. Burn a CD ahead of time of all songs about being on the road. It seems lame now but won't when you are on the road so long. If you mix old and new your family can sing along.
Have a safe trip.

Stop at your local libary and check out some books on tape or CD's ...... You can use the time to uplift your consciousness or learn about some new skill or technique ... hear about real events from the stories of people who were really there.

That sounds like utter bliss, put the headphones on, listen to your tunes, soak in the beautiful scenery and get lost in your own little world - What could be better than that? Enjoy your trip...

make up stories... satick your hand out the window, and do the wave... count tires on big trucks, try to make words from licensplate letters ( for example... HRO-098 you could make hero, herold christofer ect...) see how high you can get counting liscens plates (for example... HJU-001 is one then next you have to find 002 then 003 ect... ) see how many people wave back if you wave at them... pray for safety... contemplate the best way to kill someone and get away with it... draw a picture, but nothing good... scribble, then try to make it look like something.
