Someone broke into the office of the restaurant, after I left the store at the end of my shift. The door must have been jimmied open or something. Now they're going to fire me, because I was the last one in there. It's not fair, I have 3 boys to take care of, and now I'm going to lose my job becuase of some thief. Two of the girls, who didn't get the management position, can't stand me now because I got the position. They're telling the owner and the manager a bunch of lies saying they saw me walk out with a bag or that I gave it to my boyfriend, and that he went back into the office, when he's never stepped foot behind the counter. They're obviously the ones who took the money, since they are telling stories that are simply not true. How am I suppose to defend myslef except by saying I didn't do it. I've never stole anything in my life. Now I'm losing my job. Help :(

Florida is a right to work state. Which means you are working "at-will". That means you are working at your will, and more importantly, at the will of your superiors. In other words, you can be fired for ANYTHING that isn't protected under discrimination laws. Unless you are in a union or a government job, there's not really much you can do except plead your case and hope that your record speaks for itself.

Yes you can. Sadly, in Florida, employees are at the bottom of the totem pole. You could get fired if you parted your hair wrong. The only way, in Florida, you can get wrongly fired is if its a case of discrimination. Sorry, but I think the only way to save or restore your job is to find the thief and even then you still may not get your job back.

I am so sorry for you.
If that is the way they are treating you you perhaps need to seek another position.
I have been there and it took time to clear my name
I was invited back by new Management .
What happens next time would you be frst in the firing line
I would not bo back if they thought it in the first place.

As for the other two employees i have one word.

Florida is an "at will" employment state. You can be fired for almost any reason and the laws tend to favor the employers there. It's time to file for unemployment and find another job.

Maybe if you can get a police report that shows you didn't do it and aren't a suspect, that might help. Also, ask the two girls who are telling lies about you if they are willing to take a lie detector test to back up their statements. If they are not, tell them you can sue them for slander and defamation of character if they continue to lie about you.

No you can't get fired for something someone else did unless you were responsible for their actions. I would think that any management would be under the axe if this was the case...
