My neighbor paid me to feed and water his horse last week while he was on vacation. He also said I should let it into pasture during the day, but when I went over, the horse acted sick and wouldn't get up so I let it lay. Later at night I went back a found the horse dead in the barn. I think it was too hot, but I don't know horses that well. Anyway when my friend got back several days later, the horse stunk badly and was so stiff we couldn't move it without bringing in a truck with a winch. Now my neighbor says it's my fault because if I'd forced the animal out into the lot, it would have died there and we could have just dug a hole and rolled him in. Now he wants me to pay for the truck service. I don't want to loose our friendship but he refuses to bury the stinky animal until I pay and my house is only a few hundred feet from the horse and the smell is as bad as a skunk's. The truck service cost $150. Is it worth the friendship to pay that man?

Yes you killed the mutha ****** thing, you should be responsible for burying it. The whole thing is entirely your fault. You killed one of gods creatures. You should be ashamed. =(

pay it and consider it a smart lesson. You didn't know what you were doing caring for the horse? If the horse acted sick and wouldn't get up you DO NOT LEAVE IT. That is neglect...if friend goes to court you could end up paying for the burial as well as the *horse*. And you not only let it die but did nothing to take care of the situation before it got stinky. That is your fault and yes you should bear responsibility. The horse might be alive if you'd called a vet.

If the horse was acting sick why didn't you call a vet? he might have had a chance to live! You could have just payed for the vet and have him owe you or you could have had him wire you some money for his sick horse! I think you should have done that but because you didn't now you don't know if the horses death was your fault, natures, or his! Its your fault you didn't call a vet but it's not your fault you didn't force the horse to leave the barn. It is your neighbor's responsibility for his horse and he knew he wasn't getting himself a horse expert to watch his animal. He doesn't sound like a very nice person and is not someone that you should be friends with. He should have taken care of his horse better and now he has to pay the consequences
( litterally!).

You took responsibility for the care of this friend's horse. Did you call your friend to relay that you thought the horse was sick? Did you call a vet to ask advice?
An animal you were responsible for died in your care. Whether the friendship is worth it is not the real question here.
Pay your half of the truck and stay away from animals. I'm surprised he's still your friend since your question implies you did nothing to try to help his horse.

you didn't mention if you made any attempts at contacting your horse friend. but, at the same time, doesn't sound like you know much about horses.
it shouldn't matter where the horse died, your friends excuse where you should have let it out so it'd be easier to bury is absurd.
you may want to contact your local animal control or police department and see if they might have an idea.
depending on the negligence on either partiy would probably depend who pays.
or, if you just want to get the thing done and over with just tell your horse pal to split the cost.

It sounds like your don't know a lot about horses. A horse that is laying down and won't get up is sick and needs a vet's attention quickly. However, just putting him on the lot alone probably wouldn't have changed the outcome.
Split the bill with him.

Unless your neighbor gave you specific instructions on what to do if the horse was sick or gave you know way to contact him when it happened then I say the blame is on him. However if your going to be neighbors for a long time I'd say 150 dollars is cheap compared to years of cold shoulders and bad mouthing about you

I'd say yes, the horse was in your care, and you agreed to tend to it. A horse that it laying down and acting ill is in very grave danger, as you have learned.

you were responsible for the care of the horse and you didn't do your job so you should at least pay back the money he gave you and offer at least some of the money if not all to help your neighbor bury his horse.

no, you did your job, as long as you did what was supposed to be done, your fine. Soon his wife will get sick of the smell, he should put chains on the horse, and pull it with a tractor
