b/f John has been approached to join MI5 which seems to me a poor offer because he has a degree and I think he should go straight into MI6.

What are you talking about? MI5 and MI6 are completely different things - one deals with national security and the other with overseas operations. It's not an entry-level position from one to the other, it's an entry level position for MI5 and maybe he can climb the career ladder there but he won't be "promoted" to MI6.

Just because he has a degree doesn't mean he should skip steps. As with most degrees, I'm sure there is much that he still doesn't know that can only be learnt through performing the job.
That's why he should go in at entry level, because a degree is just the start of a process of learning to do the job, whatever that job may be!

Have no clue what MI5 or MI6 is supposed to mean but everyone has to start at the bottom.

Qualifications dont mean you'll be a good employee - you have to start at the bottom to get the experience.
Just cos he's got a degree doesnt mean he's better than everyone else.

So can he afford to not work rite now?If he can afford it then he should wait until he gets the job he wants.But keep in mind that every job starts out at the entry level.
