I can't, but there are people who can.

Let's look at the man who is sick of his job, his ex-wife, and traffic in the city. One day, he decides to sell his half of the house and move to the Northwoods... He is really "into" nature, so he decides to build his own cabin in the woods. (Much like our founding mothers and fathers who went west....). He has a gun and a fishing pole... he gets his food from the wilderness. He learns by trial and error that some plants are really disgusting, but other plants are really good in rabbit stew. He does not get the newspaper, but he reads his Bible and some volumes of Wordworth that he brought with him. He does not have electricity, but stays warm by the fire and cool under the shade of the willow down by the creek. He is happy with his own company and has no need to reach out to the world. He lives and dies in his little cabin-----

If there was such a man / men (and I believe there are), I would think that they are even more functional than the rest of us who rely on modern technology to exist. People do not have the skills they had years ago to live in a natural state. As for responsible, well, if one can take care of oneself, without burdening the rest of the world with his/her problems--without needing money, credit cards, or advice from the Answer page--without polluting the earth or harming other human beings, then I would call that very responsible. What is more responsible than being able to take care of yourself, without asking anything of anyone?

To exist 'outside' society means to also exist outside a societies norms, standards, expectations, laws, etc. If you abide by those, you are really existing within the society (no matter how independently tou try to live). And if you don't abide by those things, then you will not be seen as a 'functional and responsible adult'.

So by definition, no you can not.

My opinion is no because the world makes us who we are. In the world people need to grow and if there is no one to challenge them how would they learn new things. They might be able to, but they would be behind compared to others. For all the inventions that society comes up with one man cannot create it all.

Absolutly.
I think you are more responsible (sometimes) when you are isolated from all the material and technological things that could harm your current knowledge of right and wrong.
Its really simple. (I always talk about this) the only way to save the world is to isolate humans from everything that is harming the planet. Of course, we would "degress" in civilization, but I dont think it would be degressing, I think we would be progressing.
