If money is no object I would get an AMD FX62 AM2 Processor with DDR 2 Support.

I would also get 2 Geforce 7900 GTX PCI-e Cards running in SLI Mode with 512mb DDR3 Video Ram.

Then I would get good memory, something like Corsair Twinx memory...get 2 1gb Sticks that should do fine.

Then the backbone of your entire computer...the Power Supply, get an Antec True Power or Neo power supply or a Seasonic equivalent.

That set up will let you enjoy 99% of the games out there running at max settings for a long time (in computer terms).

Some games that are out now still wont run at their peak with this set up and games 4 years from now will demand a better rig if trends continue. Judging from games like Oblivion, then its a safe bet they will. There is no way to build a gaming rig that will still be a peak performer 4 years down the road. It just cant be done.

Now there are some changes you can make that will save you about $600 or so... Go with an Intel 805 d CPU and overclock it to run at 4100 MHz. this is a dual core chip that you can pick up for about $100 on Newegg.com.

Also keep in mind that AMD will be having a major price drop this week so wait for that to happen before you lay down you hard earned cash.

Well, I'd go for a Core2 Duo as that is the best performer right now, at least the E6600 if you want to get specific. However, I would hold off on getting the system just yet. As I'm sure you are aware (okay, maybe not), ATi and nVidia both plan to release new graphics cards around September/November bringing in support for DirectX 10. That being said, no current generation card no matter how fast or how much memory they have, do not have support for DirectX 10 so you're just going to have to wait on that. A good stop gap card is the Geforce 7600GS or 7600GT. The nVidia 8 series and ATi R600 (yet to be released) also bring to the table, GDDR4 memory, new cooling solutions and support for on-GPU physics processing (also applicable in dual GPU systems where on GPU can process physics and the other can render the environment).

One last thing, DirectX 10 support will be Vista only, Windows XP will not be getting support for DirectX 10 at all so if you want the latest your just going to have to wait (especially if you want it to last four years and any system built now simply won't) and all the wishing in the world won't let any system last four year, intermediate upgrades will be required. So, wait for the 8 series from nVidia and wait until Vista is release to buy/build your system. That is, if you can wait.

Oh, get 2GB+ of memory if you want to run Vista and play games.

You're just wasting money if you get two high-end graphics cards now, wait for the ones that support DirectX 10, if you must purchase one of the stop gap cards I listed. It's your money but you have been warned.

wow.
um
for the next 3-4 years, top games, you need wayyyy more than that.
we are talking like
a dual core AMD Athlon 64
the FX series isn't that great
i have a FX-57, and im disapointed with it's overclock-ablitlities with out the phase changer

I would get the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo
for 423 bucks
thats a good price for a dual core 2.4ghz
that thing will overclock to 2.9ghz at least
if you get water
it will go higher.
for the videocard
get 2 512mb 7900 GTXs
it will cost a lot
but will garentee perfect performance for a while
a way to save money is to just get the
256mb 7900 GTX

For next 3~4 year ?, If you buy a state of art graphic card now, 6 month later , you will have to buy another one to run newest computer games..more likely.

I found the video ram/card is more important than the processor. Most processors can handle games. But video cards aren't, I have 2 powerful computers but the vidoe cards are not powerful enough or compatible, and can't play certain games.
