Usually they wear makeup for performances and photo appearances and not going to the corner store.

Actors and singers need to wear makeup, because the makeup will make their faces darker and more defined, since all the lights wash their faces out.
It is only not normal for guys to wear makeup because they normally choose not to wear it. If they did normally choose to wear make-up, then it Would be considered normal for guys to wear make-up, would it not?

They portrait people better looking or worse looking than themselves, plus it has to fit with the costumes they wear and with the story line. They project a certain persona and that includes appropriate changes to their features (think Charlize Theron in Monster!)

It's for the cameras or the stage. For features to look normal on stage they have to be exaggerated. For the camera they have to be smoothed out to hide lines, zits, uneven color skin, etc.

because they are being scrutinzed by the whole entire world to look good.
i doubt normal guys are under that kind of pressure.
but i guess if you want to wear make up,
