There are TONS of campsites between here and there. The ones closer to Austin will be cooler this time of year, but the state parks vary so much that they can each be pretty interesting.
A few nice ones - Inks Lake (Burnet, TX) is well treed and has a great lake, nice shady campsites, showers and flush toilets. Dogs are okay.
Colorado Bend is further north and also really nice. Tell him to check out the falls while there.
You can find out more about, as well as make reservations at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website - http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/
I have photos and information on some on my site as well - http://www.austininaction.com
Hope he has fun.
