whoa....
I don't know what to say....
sorry about what happened...
according to people, human lives are more important, maybe you should have went to the boy first...but then again 20 people standing around doing nothing really makes me sick....
again...don't feel bad...it wasn't your fault

Two issues-
1. Equality of life:
To equate the life of a person with the life of a bird or other animal is a difficult position to support in most cultures and societies.
It is a position of luxury- poor people cannot afford to equate human and animal life- they use animals for food and supplies because they have no other options. Other cultures and people would think you are insane for even suggesting such a premise.
There a lots of cultures that value animals in general, that respect their life and rights even while hunting or using them. None of these cultures, as far as I know, would sacrifice a child for a dog.
2. Responding according to training.
I don't know the Pet First Aid outline, but I'm willing to bet in the class that you learned about the Good Samaritan Act, which would have protected you had you seen to the needs of the child.
I'd also bet that you know enough first aid to have known that you should at least have called 911 promptly for the child. If this was done, it was not mentioned.
Most Red Cross courses also teach checking the scene, identifying victims, and prioritizing victims. You did not mention doing any of this.
Doing CPR and Rescue Breathing on a child is very similar to doing it for an animal. you could at least have tried.
There are often mixed emotions after a rescue attempt, successful or not. If this was a real event, you might want to seek some counselling.

Well if the boy didn't need CPR because he was still breathing then you did the right thing. But if they both needed CPR then I would have helped the boy over the dog. I justed looked it up and they are pretty much one in the same and in this case I think the human life is a tad bit more important than a dogs. Sorry you even had to deal with that I too am appauled that there were that many people and no one did anything to try and help, stop some bleeding or something, talk to the boy to keep him concious something, anything.

whether you were wrong or right is a matter of opinion.
some people will say wrong, some will say right.
there were other people standing around, so why didn't anyone help the boy?
as a mother, i would be appalled that someone saved the dog over my child, but i'm biased because i have kids of my own.
did you try to get help for the boy before you helped the dog?
what is done is done, you can't change it.
i'm sure this will torment you till the end of you days, but will you let it?
it's not your fault the boy died. i think you were right to only help the dog, because what if you hurt the boy more than he already was?
you said yourself, 'the only first aid training you have is for animals, how could you be expected to help the boy?
seek counseling. i'm sure someone can help you through this difficult time.

Dont let it get you, atleast you had one save. I would have helped the boy first, but thats because Im trained to do that. Look at it this way...you arent trained in First Aid for humans. If you tried to help the boy and you couldnt save him you could have been looked at as the cause of his death and then sued for neglegence. Plus you would have felt crappy because the dog died too. When its someones time, its their time. Just remember, first thing you do when you come onto a scene like that is look to the closest person and say "You call 911!" then you can start working on your animal as you are trained to do.

No. You did the right thing by helping the dog. Tell the people you were only trained in dog CPR or whatever it is.

No. You tried the best that you could. What happened happened and it is not your fault. Those people watching should have tried to help. A life is a life. It shows your compassion that at least you tried to provide some help.

Good story. Even If it were true, however, I wouldn't hate you. I always have more sympathy for animals than for people, anyway.
