Here's a good way to start : When in doubt, both feet out.
Meaning, clutch and brake if you are unsure of what to do. Good luck.

It's all about coordination between the engines power band and the gearing in the vehicle. But to make it simple you push the clutch pedal down while letting off the gas pedal to shift gears when to do it depends on a variety of factors though in some vehicles the timing is done for you as a light will come on thats in your dashboard reminding you to either upshift or downshift. But if your vehicle does not have such a feature the easiest way to know when to upshift is when you are no longer acellerating while in that gear as for downshifting when the vehicle feels like it's not moving at a proper speed in that gear then it's time to downshift. After driving a vehicle with a stickshift for a couple of hours you will get a feel for when to shift.Other pointers always remember to push the clutch in when slowing to a stop and when taking off from being stopped press the gas pedal down GENTLY as you GENTLY ease off the clutch pedal,(don't be alarmed or surprised if you have a few jerky starts or if you stall the vehicle when taking off from a stop.smoothness and skills will come as time goes along).(NOW FOR THE HARDEST PART OF DRIVING A STICKSHIFT) HOLDING YOUR VEHICLE ON A HILL AT A TRAFFIC INTERSECTION WHILE WATING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE This skill only comes with much practice as it involves balancing the gas pedal and the clutch pedal at the same time without stalling the wehicle or rolling backwards into the vehicle behind you and BESIDES PRACTICE THERE IS NO WAY TO LEARN THIS SKILL.

Yes, in 1982, when I took driver's ed, they put us in stick shift Nissan Pickup trucks. I had to learn it and I'm glad I did. It's tricky when you're stopped on a steep hill, and have to take off from there, like at a stoplight, but once you get the feel for it, it's pretty easy. Still makes me a little nervous, especially since I'm not used to them anymore. I always liked being able to change the gears when I wanted too instead of waiting on the automatic transmission. I think they drive better, but having to change gears a lot, such as in the city, can be a pain.

When the engine is off, make sure the gear shift is at neutral. Make sure the emergency brake is on. Put the ignition key into the ignition. Turn the key clockwise/forward. When the engine starts, let it run for a minute to get the oil in the engine flowing. Put your left foot on the clutch pedal. Hold your right foot over the gas pedal. Push the clutch pedal to the floor. Move the shift lever to first gear. Release the emergency brake. Simultaneously begin to let the clutch pedal up as you are pushing down on the gas pedal. You will be moving forward now. When you are going forward, speed up until the engine rpm gets to about 3000, then simultaneously let up on the gas pedal as you push the clutch to the floor. Then move the shift lever from first to second gear. Then simultaneously let up on the clutch pedal as you depress the gas pedal. Repeat the process to move up to third gear and to any additional gears.
When you want to slow down, use your right foot to let up on the gas pedal then move it to the brake pedal. Depress the brake pedal, then when the engine speed slows to less than 1000 rpm, depress the clutch pedal, so you don't stall the engine as you come to a stop. Then start over from "move the shift lever to first..."

Push in the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, making sure the trans. is in neutral. Start the engine and let the clutch out. When you are ready to move, push the clutch pedal down again and select your gear, generally first or reverse. When you are ready to go, slowly let the clutch pedal back out and start to push the gas pedal. As you let the clutch pedal out, you will feel the clutch begin to engage and the car may want to move forward on its own, but that is ok, that's just how it works. Once you are moving and want to shift gears, let off of the gas and push the clutch in. Switch gears and let the clutch back out while getting back on the gas. It takes some practice and you will stall the engine sometimes, but you'll get it. When you need to stop, let off the gas and press in the clutch and press on the brake pedal. Always remember to push the clutch in when stopping.

To "switch gears" you must let off on the gas while you engage the clutch (that would be the third pedal). The location of your gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd and possibly 4th) will vary, depending on the make of the vehicle you are attempting to operate. You really need someone to show you. I doubt very much it could be taught in the narrative. Good luck.

When shifting from gear to gear let off the gas. First gear is good until about 10 m.p.h., shift to 2nd to about 30 m.p.h. Go to 3rd to 40m.p.h. the to 4th to about 50-55 then on to 5th gear.

Good question Hun? I drove 2 cars, oh about 20 years ago, and they both were stick, and my friends were trying too teach me, how to drive stick, and alls I did, was "stall" both of them, over & over, again !!! Just too much going on, when I just wanted to pay attention to the road, not all these different steps I had to do just to drive!!! Rediculous!!! I will always drive automatic, forget the whole clutch, stick, thing!! Not for me.......Good-Luck to you, You might just pick it up really easy, most people do, I hope you get good advise, on this...
