She was trying to protect her hands and nails, if you put your hands in very hot water it will soften and damage the nails. It's also better to wear rubber gloves when washing up as you can then have the water at a much higher temperature.

practising with something rubber for when something else requiring rubber needs washing up

Many people are sensitive to cleaning agents and soaps. She may not be worrying about her hands as much as a chemical burn as they can be as nasty as a heat burn.
