It is safer to not use harsh cleaning chemicals, but very little is likely to be absorbed through the skin. If you want details, you need to know the *specific* chemical you are using. It's not exactly the same, but I am including a link to the La Leche League Web site about harsh hair-care products. They are considered safe while breastfeeding, and they are *applied* to the skin.

It's funny because I was wondering about this very thing about a week ago. I am still breastfeeding my 6 month old son and was worried that the disinfectant wipes that I occasionally used to sanitize in the bathroom were dangerous and potentially being absorbed into my skin. i couldn't find any good info about this when I googled it so I decided to go with my gut and switched to all-natural cleansers. There are some great natural things on the market now. If you shop on-line sometimes like I do you can go to drugstore.com and go to the natural store that they have and select from countless natural products. I like the "Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner" - works good for me.
Best wishes.

Good for you! Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing to do for your baby. That said I wouldn't worry about cleaner being absorbed through your skin and contaminating your milk just wash your hands well when you are through cleaning.

According to the web site listed below, they say there is little risk of contaminating your milk. However, knowing that many things ARE absorbed through the skin so easily, I would definitely wear gloves. I did when I was nursing my daughter. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

I don't beleive that regular household cleaners would be an issue as long as you wash your hands properly before feeding the baby.
However, I do reccomend you use gloves if you are going to be using insecticides or herbicides,
they can pass through to your breastmilk.

No. There's really no danger of that happening. I guess you could wear gloves if you wanted to but I never used them when I was breastfeeding my kids.

Mmm...I don't think so, but if you're that concerned about it you can certainly wear rubber gloves. What kind of cleaner? Like standard, all-purpose cleaner you buy from the grocery store? I use that kind of stuff, I breastfeed my son, and I don't bother with gloves.

I would just wash your hands, after you clean........And I wouldn't worry too much......All 4, of my children, are perfectly healthy, and I did all the cooking, cleaning, and then some, while nursing all of them......And their all quite fine, and never got sick, during the nursing stages..... Dont stress, just wash your hands, after you do anything!!! I wash my hands atleast 20-30, times a day, no matter what !!! And 2, of my kids are full grown, the other two are teens, I just do it , because, I hate dirty hands..... Just a compulsive habit, of mine, I guess.. You & your baby, will be just fine, Relax & enjoy them while their small, they grow-up, before we know it!! Smile!!

I don't think that is possible but if you are worried I would ask a health care provider...I always wash my hands before I nurse just to be sanitary. And I also always have visitors wash their hands when they come over to visit before I let them hold my daughter...there are alot of germs in the world.
