Well to me the best films in the horror genre are the ones that are suspenseful and catch you by surprise. Also those that intrigue the mind and make you wonder. So the best horror films are:
1.The Hills Have Eyes
2.The Ring
3.Nightmare on Elm Street 1
4.Clockwork Orange
5.Psycho

Psycho is classic. Hitchcock was a master. Check out High Tension, that's a good one. Event Horizon was the last horror film I can remember that gave me nightmares, it was scary as hell. Literally.

The Others Great directing in that one. No special effects. Your mind does most of the filling in the blanks. Adds to the suspense

Nightmare on Elm Street. When i was small I was allowed to watch horror movies and that one scared me to death. Horrible.
