Hypnosis is merely directed awareness. If you stepped on a sharp spike you likely wouldn't even notice that there were birds flying overhead. Your attention would be entirely focused on the pain. Auto hypnosis requires you to close your eyes and talk yourself into total relaxation (so that tight muscles to not compete for your attention). Once relaxed you can direct your own awareness to accomplish a task you had in mind before relaxing. Try this. Think a minute of how your foot feels inside your right shoe. Then concentrate on some sound outside the room you are in. Lastly, think of something you plan to do tomorrow. Good, I have just directed your awareness at something within you, something outside of you and something completely imaginary at this moment. You should have little trouble directing your own awareness; especially if completely relaxed. In a state of complete relaxation you are more susceptible to suggestions, even your own. You could suggest for example that eating half servings is a good way to lose a little weight. Or perhaps that cigarettes don't taste as good as you thought they should and it is OK to cut back on smoking and even quit. Or perhaps that your memory will improve as you pay more attention to important information such as names. Merely repeat the suggestion several times. Then tell yourself that you will now wake up feeling relaxed and in good health on the count of three: One, two, three.

Autohypnosis can give you a totally relaxed feeling like a disembodied floating brain but that is not necessary to give yourself constructive suggestions.

One relaxation technique is to imagine that a plane surface is passing through your body from head to toe and shoulders to finger tips relaxing every nerve and muscle as you inhale deeply and exhale very slowly. Concentrate on the major muscles as the plane moves along and notice that they relax as you mention them: head muscles, neck muscles, chest muscles, etc. The plane will push along excess tension right out of your toes and finger tips. When you finish with your session you may merely fall asleep and awake later completely refreshed.

You can also buy relaxation tapes or visit a professional hypnologist who can teach you the best procedures including autohypnosis. Good luck.
