can i use silicone caulk to attach tile to walls that wont be wet, instead of thinset? how about something like liquid nails? seems to me it would work as it won't be walked on or get wet. and then grout as usual.

its better to use a cement based adhesive than a liquid one. There will be almost no movement of the tile. Many tile pros like to use mastic because its easier using premixed glue than mixing thinset constantly.

Yes, you can. There's been an ongoing debate about using silicone instead of thinset AND grout in order to achieve a more seamless look. (more like a slab instead of tiles) Silicone is applied evenly to both surfaces and then tile is slid and butted together allowing excess silicone to be forced out at seam, allowed to cure and then trimmed flush with a razor blade. The debate is more about which will last longer and not so much about its use. Its use is acceptable-ask anyone who has ever tried to remove something that had been silicone sealed to any smooth surface. I would use spacers and I'd be leery of using it on very large/heavy tile without braces of some sort, but yes, silicone will work. And of the construction adhesives, my pick is loctite's GRABBER. It's cheaper by far and works better as well. Good Luck.

Tile Silicone

Use a tile mastic, not thinset, for tile on walls. Other products might allow the tile to move enough for the grout to work loose, allow the tile to slip before the adhesive sets, ot not stick the tile to the wall at all.

Thinset is the designated heavy duty adhesive you use in tile installation on floors and walls. Mixing is needed. Tile mastic is basically used for wall tile installation. Ready to use with no mixing.

I have used many times silicone and/or liquid nail in my wall tile installation in dry areas like walls outside bath shower areas and backsplashes. Least mess, no mixing, you can stop anytime with no tools to wash. And yes, grout as usual. They work great!!!

Do NOT use thin set on walls unless they are water resistant...dry wall will be ruined. Tile mastic is preferred..is a latex base, dries within about 24-48 hours, grout and you are done.

No , don't use silicone. Use tile mastic or grout. Anything else and you'll spend time to fix it when it fails.

If you're determined not to mix thin set, use mastic. It's made just for this application. I don't know why you couldn't use the others, but I've never been one to try something unproven.
