...and that's where it originated. It's a technical legal term that crossed over to general use. It means, generally, that the dates (and times) specified in a contract are important terms of the contract.

I am not sure of the originaltion, but it means that timing is critical.... for instance, a saleman might say it to get a buyer to make a decision more quickly, an ad may say it so consumers will know there is a time limit on a special, etc..... In a contractual document, it is used to express that a quick decision or action is required.

time is of the essence is simply another way of saying we need to get this done fast and in an orderly manner so therefore do not waste time cause time is of the essence .
