Some things you can do to help alleviate the plugged ear sensation:
Yawn, yawn, yawn
Chew gum,
Swallow
Drink Hot Lemonade (honest, it's good for colds, vitamin C, and can clear up congestion even if you don't have a cold.) Actually any hot beverage will do.
Blow your nose VERY gently, then pinch the nostrils closed and keep blowing, firmly but gently. Stop, then yawn.
Remember, do everything gently, you don't want anymore pain than you already have.
You also might like to try lying down on either side and cupping your hands over your ears to warm the air. Once it is warm, slowly flatten the palms over the entire ear and flex in and out, not taking your hands off your ears. The pressure changes can gently move the eardrum in and out thereby changing the pressure inside on the other side of the eardrum.
If none of these suggestions help, it really is time to see a physician, you may have an inner ear infection that needs to be treated. Hope this helps and good luck.

Another thing to try is to drink warm liquids: tea, coffee, warm water. It softens the ear wax, then try the other things like swallowing, chewing gum, etc. Is it possible you got water stuck in your ear? There are products at the drug store to alleviate it, cheap.

If you are talking about changing altitude like going up in an airplane and coming back down again or going up a mountain and then down again, you have to use what is called Valve salva. basically, when you Go up, you have to swallow hard and a bunch. When you go down, you have to hold your nose, close your mouth and try to breathe out hard.
