On Mythbusters they did an episode on this the best answer involved feeding the haystack into a rotating drum with strong magnets on it the hay would come out the other end and the needles would stick to the magnets

Throw a couple kids into the haystack to play. That needle will be found much faster than you could get to the store to buy a new one!

Burn the haystack! Myth Busters did this one once Adam won by putting the hay in water and tearing it apart. The hay floats and the needles fell to the bottom!

Dump the haystack into a pool of water. the hay will float to the top and the needle will sink to the bottom.

Fling yourself in at all angles of the haystack from top to bottom side to side, and when you feel alot of pain, then you've found the needle !

Get a magnet to attract the needle out, or get a metal detector. Or get a really fat person to sit on it until the needle pokes them
