Of course, I know this is a hypothetical situation. It is just an idea...Who are the matchups?

The lobbyists must stay unknown to the general public in order to conduct business as usual. They DO NOT want us to know who they are or we might put restrictions on them. Some one with the right know-how could find out who they are and what they represent, so the newspaper investigative reporters could do it but to them it just isn't exciting enough.

I'd like to see a debate with an environmentalist, a democrat, a republican, and a libertarian. It would be great to let a debate referee throw questions at them regarding the national debt, the war, the economy, energy in all its forms, and pollution.

Lobbyists don't have a political agenda, they are kind of like paid lawyers fighting for the agenda of the interests they represent. The powerful lobbies have business money behind them. I would argue that the hypothetical situation is not far from the actual situation we have now. Politicians for the most part go into office with ideals and want to make a difference, but soon learn that to make any difference you have to stay in power and compromise at every turn. To stay in power they need money and favorable media coverage (and all the other things that lobbyists do- like ghostwrite legislation). If a politician doesn't pander to their business lobbies then their political competitors get the favorable treatment. What we see now is politicians with an agenda that serves the top 1% (giant corporations) and fools the rest of us into thinking we are getting the benefits of a better economy and protection from scary foreign threats. But in reality the corporations get protection from competition and social responsibility, and all we get is more competition for jobs, lower wages, longer hours- and nothing changes because it serves the interest of those 1% in power. All our money is spent on consumption and flows to the top 1%. We come home after work too tired to care, we don't know who to trust, we rely on corporate news media for information, and they are in bed with the politicians. There doesn't have to be a conspiracy either. Profits are maximized when you cut investigative reporting, rely on official sources, distract and overwhelm audiences with pundits arguing, narrow the range of debate to exclude core issues of class and power, or things that both parties agree on like overfunding the military. This is all a bit of an oversimplification, but it is helpful to start seeing the big picture and questioning what you have always assumed to be fair and true. There is a lot of money invested in PR to make you believe it is in your best interests to keep things the way they are.

Do we really need that? It didnt take a detective to know Bush represented the oil companies, and big business in general.

Because people who control power do not want other people to realize they are in power. That's like the number 3 rule of ruling.
