the reason why processors are smaller on laptops is because they clock them down and use more power per wattage which means that it means you will have better battery life and good performance. for example i have a 1.73 centrino processor which gives me 3.5 hours battery life but it compared as a 2.8ghz pentum 4 in performance. but if i were to have a pentium 4 2.8 ghz in my laptop i would prolly have 15 minute battery so that is why they are making them like that and the new centrino core duo are clocked even lower because they deliver so much more performance but need to save power.

The actual components in laptops are, generally speaking, smaller than desktop computers.
However the performance may as good as or better.

That's quite clear. Because they want to fit all contents of a desktop's case into a small notebook sized laptop.

The bigger the processor, the more heat. You don't want 3rd degree burns on your lap?
