Janis Joplin is my favorite of these choices. She could have a smooth or a bluesy grating voice. I loved her.
Diana Ross had the better overall voice quality.
Cher has an aquired taste of a vibrato.
Cass Elliots voice is too soapy clean.

hard to say they are all different and Cher is one of those singers that you have to specify now or sonny and cher days.

1.Dianna Ross would be my first reactions.
2.Cher from Sonny and Cher days
3. Janis Joplin and Cass tied for third.

I vote for Mama Cass. I just like listening to her, very mellow and easy. Janice Joplin also could hold her own.

D. Ross! For overall contributions to the field of music, she might be beaten by 1 or more of the other 3, but that wasn't the question, was it?

Mama Cass....but they all have ( or had) star quality. You really don't need a great voice, if you have that.
