*Chuckles* Americans have always believed that if big is good, bigger is better and the biggest is the best. Part of it is ego, part of it is efficency, and part of it is just being stupid.
Most people, do NOT own an SUV.
Most places in the United States does NOT have a good reliable public transportation system like the Europeans or the Asians do.
Also, European countrys are SMALL- we have geographical areas that are ONE STATE that is the size of several of your countries!. To drive from Seattle, Washington State to the halfway point in America- which is like Chicago, Illinois- is roughly some 1400 miles or about 2200 KM,,and thats ONE THIRD OF THE SIZE OF THE CONTENENT!.
Just to cross the State of Montanna is about 700 miles or 1000KM give or take a bit.
We need the size sometimes because our nation is so darn big.
However, its interesting to note that those who have huge SUV's are also the first ones to ***** about fuel economy.
My little Suzuki Swift gets 45 miles to the gallon. My van's get about 25 MPG. This is about normal

There are all sorts of reasons for American cars having large engines. Among them:
Americans tow a good many things, and large engines with their increased mass dissipate heat well and tend to produce more torque at lower RPMs.
It is much easier to build powerful large engine on a large block than to have to resort to all sorts of tricks like superchargers, turbochargers, intercoolers, multi-valve heads, and so on.
Fuel prices are also certainly a factor.
Americans tend to take a great many driving vacations and the distances are longer between places than in Europe, so we tend to like big cars in which we can spread out a bit, throw in four or five suitcases and the whole family, and big cars tend to run effortlessly on large engines.
Car manufacturers tend to buy parts years in advance and will stockpile blocks and their accessories for multiple year production runs. Accordingly, even when fuel prices rise, the industry is slow to react by offering small engines in small cars because they will be stuck with inventory.

Just the dummies that buy them and then complain at the pump everyday they fill up . It is rather comical to see them driving SUVs and P.U. trucks and complaining about the fuel prices . People are scrimping on other things just to kep their gas hogs - not too brilliant but gas will catch up to europe shortly and SUVs will be given away !!!!
