there are any number of reasons why a colon stops functioning, short of an education in medicine, saying that it isn't working anymore is about as deep as the doctor is likely to get if he thinks you wouldn't understand the terminology involved. The surgery to remove it is called a colectomy, and depending on how much is removed you will end up with a colostomy or an ileostomy. these terms entered into google will get you a great deal of information. I suggest you let the shock of the diagnosis calm down a bit, because you don't seem ready to assimilate information.

first, i would ask the doctor what your colon problem is called in medical terms, ask how it would occur, and if there were alternative ways to deal with your damaged colon. you wonder about these questions here, but you need to be wondering about them with your doctor....don't be afraid to ask questions, especially if it involves your physical well-being. and if he couldn't tell you (?!) i would then look up colon diseases, colon condition, colon surgery, colon removal and get information that way. in a major situation like this, i would then get the opinion of another doctor to get more information before i proceeded with making any decisions.

There could be a whole list of reasons why your colon is obstructed. Your doctor is the one that should be giving you all the information. If you have any doubts for any reason go get a second opinon.
Good luck

point 4 of any maximum cancers is undesirable information. Lance Armstrong survived point 4 testicular maximum cancers, yet this is an quite curable maximum cancers. on your mom, the probabilities of her surviving the main cancers and the therapy are no longer very extreme, at any age. For point 4 colon maximum cancers, the 5-year survival fee is 5%.
