I suppose you could argue it is 18 outcomes for Q1, 1-6 on the die and 2 heads, 2 tails or a head and a tail on the coins, but you really ought to distinguish head on the dime and tail on the quarter from tail on the dime and head on the quarter i.e. the answer is 24 not 18,

The only way the questioner's options of 8 or 12 could occur is if three faces of the die said "!" and three said "2" (that would yield 2*2*2=8) or two faces of the die said "1", two said "2" and two said "3" (that would yield 2*2*3=12) or we had other than a 6-sided die.

The mix and match outfits question is, as others have said, a choice of 4 trousers with 3 tops, 12 possible outcomes. therefore (4*3=12)

Why do I get the feeling this is homework, and the first question has been copied down wrongly?

There are two possible outcomes for tossing a coin - heads or tails. And rolling one die has six possible outcomes. So the total possible outcomes of tossing a dime (2) and a quarter (2) and rolling a die (6) is 2 x 2 x 6 = 24.

Use the same logic on the clothes question: four possible choices of pants, three different shirts .... possible number of combinations is 4 x 3 or 12.

Sorry, but the answer to #1 IS 24. (2*2*6)

And the answer to #2 is 12.
