Is there anyway to reset the password so I can use the laptop other than paying a tech to do it?

It has windows xp on it and boots up to the windows screen where you can change the password but you have to put the old one in first then put the new one in twice.

Wow! Tahnks everyone for your help. I have just one problem - The person who sold the laptop to me has no further information about the previous owner and I do not have any windows disks of any kind.

ok - I got it all fixed except for one minor problem - the computer now has a pop up bubble that says it has a virus. I can't get onto the internet or anything now. How do I fix this? Thanks All!

I'm assuming it's a Windows XP Machine. Sometimes you can get lucky by repeatedly hitting F8 at startup and choosing to boot in safe mode and choosing administrator there. Sometimes, people create a user account that has administrator privileges and give it a password, but they never make the main admin account password protected. If you can get into it from safe mode, just go to control panel / settings / users / choose the passworded account and remove the password. If this trick won't work, there are 2 harder ways that will. One is to get this thing here http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/... and create a boot floppy that you boot to and can create another admin account that you can use to get in and do what I described above. Another thing is to create the ultimate boot CD for windows and use it, but that's an endeavor to create. It can be done. I do it all the time. People give me their computers to work on and go on vacation or something and when I start working on them, sometimes they have a password and I forgot to ask for it, so I just do this and they think I'm cool :)

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.

The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

Aight this is the easiest question on this site:

Turn on your computer and some how get to start up options - u do this by like clicking F12 or F10 depends on what it tells you when the manufacturer logo appears.

Select start up in "Safe Mode"

When the computer loads up in safe mode, you will see that there is a new user account called "Administrator". This will have no password but has limited features designed to fix problems.

Under safe mode administrator, go to Start >>> Control Panel>>> user accounts>>> and go to your account and REMOVE PASSWORD.

Then all you do is restart normally, log on to your account w/no password, and make a new one!!!

yee yee mad easyy

You need to contact the seller and tell him/her the problem. If you can't use the computer and there's nothing in the listing about it, you can file a "SNAD" report (significantly not as described). You might also want to ask this question on the Answer Center board on Ebay. It's under the Communities link. There are some very knowledgable people who answer questions on there who might could advise you better than people here.

if you need to reinstall windows because you cant get in contact with the seller then follow the following instructions:

when your computer starts up you can press the delete or escape key usually to get into the BIOS

In the BIOS look about and change the primary boot device to be your CD/DVD drive, then put your win xp disk into the drive and restart the machine (after saving the changes in the BIOS) this will then boot off the disk and allow you to reinstall windows

Either try to get the password from the last owner, or reinstall windows.
