I am a multi-racial female, eighth generation American. If it were not for my brown skin, no one would question my ethnic background, but because I have brown skin, that somehow automatically makes me "African-American", even though there is no African in my heritage. America needs to redefine their categories ... it's not just "black" "white" "hispanic" "native american" "pacific islander" ... do you agree?

I do agree that America does need to refine the categories, I mean my ancestors were from Ireland, but you'd never know from lookig at my avatar. I have doubts that this will ever occur. We live in a society where simplicity rules. It's much easier to call someone white, black, hispanic and the like instead of finding out their full heritage. Sadly looks also factor into this as we assume without knowing. If you look black, then you must be black would be the thinking. It's sad, but a part of life.

My advice would be to just go with the flow and try not to feel too offended when someone calls you black. It isn't meant to be insulting. People just don't know any better. Peace out.

I believe it is dependent on where you are & who you hang with. In a way, we are defined by how we are perceived by others. I am also multi & proud of all of the different heritages & also, with me there is just a little mystery & a little unknown, but it is noticeable I am not just from one kind of people. So WHAT? That makes me interesting. People assume sometimes & that makes them a bit ignorant.

I know a lot of mixed people who also have African roots, but we also adhere to the other cultures that are included in our family trees. African-American is not offensive, it's just not a complete enough description.

I really can't stand the checkboxes for race because they are also symbolic of bureaucratic ignorance, ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA which as I recall, was well-known as "the melting pot", where many people have mixed together, where many people have mixed heritages. There is WAY TOO MUCH emphasis on race for this time & place. For a long time, I have checked the "other" box & noted either human or more recently Creole.

The West Indian designation of Creole seems most accurate, in my case. "Colored", as used in the African context also sometimes seems far more accurate to describe many people with African roots, rather than calling people Black (from an artist's standpoint there are really very fewwww people that are really that dark) or calling people African American (because a lot of us have other heritages in our family trees).

Look, it's called the one-drop rule. if you have black blood, you're black. plain and simple. This rule applies for hispanics, native americans, and any non-white people. sorry, but that's how the world exists! And for the question about african-americans you answered, your ancestors are traced to Africa. GET A CLUE! All the continents were one super-continent called Pangea aka AFRICA! Besides, Blacks, whites, and hispanics are mixed and they take the identity of one race, why can't you??

P.S. I'm mixed with indian/Native American!

My beloved nephew has an African Mother and an English Father. His nationality is British..his race? I think we are less obsessed with race here because I don't know that I have ever been asked what race I am...I suppose if I had to define his race, I would say the Staggeringly beautiful People!

Well, baby, be proud of your brown skin, first of all(we all got a little African in us, whether you like it or not!) There's nothing to be ashamed of, sweetie. Mariah Carey has no problems identifying with her "black side", neither does Tamia, or Halle Berry. You have to be comfortable with YOU. It sounds like to me you have what I like to call "Imitation of Life Syndrome". You're of mixed race, but you want to identify yourself as something else. I have Black, Native American, and White in my family tree. But I'm proud to be black, a mother, and bi. Be comfy in your skin, boo.

Sorry you are black girl, might as well pimp your crib and get on with the hip-hop collection. Who gives a sh*** how many generations you have been here, you don't get free tokens per generation, you're the same as the dude that just crossed the border a minute ago. Later sista.

It happens. My BF tans like no one's business and is often confused for being Mexican or Native American. He's prettymuch pure English/Irish. Amd my roommate, who was full German, was very dark too--everyone thought she was Mexican.

I am multiracial, and I look very white. It's sad that most people assume you gotta have dark skin to be multiracial.
