what is the term for a word in spanish that is spelled the same and has the same meaning in english and spanish

I think you mean a cognate (in Spanish: cognado). It's a word that transfers straight over from one language to another. Be careful, though, there are false cognates out there that will trip you up if you're not careful...like say "embarrassed" in English, while "embarazada" means pregnant!
