Go to search engines. Do a search that pertains to the main theme of you own website. When the results come, look near the bottom of the page and you should find a link that says something like "Submit A Site" or "Refer A Site". Click on that and submit your site to the search engine. Do this for the major engines like Yahoo!, Google, MSN and any others you know of.

You should have about 3 -5 key words in your website. Keep a ratio of 10 - 1 or better in the text of your site. In other words, for every 10 words written at least 1 should be one of your keywords.

You will need people to link to you. Go back to the search engines and do a search on one of your keywords. See who the top (at least) 5 sites are. Write down their url's. Such as "www.acme.com". Now go to Google and search for this "link: www.acme.com". This will show you people who are linking to that site. Contact these people and politely ask them to trade links with you, this is called a 'reciprocal' link. They will put a link on their site to yours and you put a link on your site to theirs. You should have one page of your site that is solely for this purpose.

Write a site map. Search engines love site maps. This is simply another page of your web site that lists all the pages that can be found. Make them linkable to the other pages. When the search engine bots crawl your site, they will find the site map and thus will record all the pages of your site.

These are all important things to do. Search engines are vital to your popularity. If they don't list you high enough, people won't find you when they search their subject.
