Have you ever seen a square person?

the main reason that manholes are round is so they cant fall in when the cover is being reinstalled.

yes there are square covers, those are generelly either for Electric or some sort of Telecommunications.
but curb inlets are square and if you dont set them just right, they will fall in.

i am a surveyor, and one of our jobs is to "Asbuilt" a new subdivisions sewer system to make sure it was built according to plan. im a big guy, i picked up the square lid thru it down onto the manhole and it proceed to fall 15 down, needless to say it was December, there was 3' of water in the bottom of the manhole, and i was wet, cold, and dragging an 80# lid up the ladder inside.

cost - the added material of a square one does not make it easier to get into + for modern domestic, manholes, the bit underneath them is also round

That way they always fit the hole. No fussing around getting it into position like a square one would need. Also, a square one could fall into the hole if angled properly.

They are the same size whatever way you put them in the hole, plus a round object has the same structural strength in any direction.

The round ones are plastic under the ground and are made in factories, easier, while square ones are brick under the ground and made in-situ.

No No No you all have it wrong. What is the shape of the guy going in the hole.......ROUND, this is also why they seem to be big and round

They are round so you can't drop them into the hole that they are covering. Think about it, if they were square or any other shape you could drop them in the hole.
