The indians that you refer to are the ones who were from the coast of South Carolina to the Pee Dee. But you must already realize that history is factual as long as the information provided is accurate.

More than mere trinkets or currency abalone shell is sacred to the Apaches. I am White Mountain Apache and have seen it used often in sacred ceremonies...
Abalone shell has been used in many cultures as a decorative jewelry and for carvings. A disc of abalone shell is worn on the forehead of Apache girls as they greet the sun in the morning of their initiation into womanhood.
Abalone strengthens the structure of the body and the functions of the heart chakra. Both pearl and abalone shell hold the same divinatory meaning:
Intimately connected to the sea - represents the tides of emotion
An easy flow of feelings and sensitivities to others
Connected to family and particularly motherhood
Harmony in relationships
The play and variety of colors represent change as the beauty of existence

Depends on what coastal Nations used them. For the northwestern tribes and the northeastern tribes they used abalone shells as a form of currency, but more so for decoration on ceremonial garb.
To an Apache or a Navajo such trinkets would merely be decorative items upon trade.

the more feathers the more influence you have on the community, sort of like the catholics and their hats. The bigger the hat, the more important the person. God must have a HUGE freakin' sombrero!
