I'm going for two nights just to look see.
Exluding flights, transfers and accomodation, can any one suggest a sensible budget and any must see venues?

I went to Krakow for 3 days and took £50 a day spending money which covered me perectly, although it does depend where you eat etc. You can get a nice main course for around £2 upwards, a shot of vodka 60p - £1 and a pint of beer around £1 - £1.50.

Go to the castle and, when leaving it, go down the spiral staircase and out through the 'dragons caves'.

You can climb the tower on the main square for great views. Other than that you'll probably spend most of your time on the square and exploring the streets which come off it. I spent a day touring the old Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, which was really nice and full of history.

The "must-see" in Cracov and neightbourhood?

First, the Market Square, along with St.Mary's Church. Then, Wawel Castle... with everything there (except maybe the Dragon's Cave, I did enjoyed it when I was 6, but when I grew up it wasn't worth the time any more). Then, if you want, you can find things worth seeing for much more than just two days :)

Wieliczka Salt mine is a must if you are in Krakow. I've been there several times, and it's still great... no matter whether I was 6 or 26 years old. However, if you don't speak Polish, better plan it in advance, so you coumd get a guide in an another language. They cover most of them. Also, visiting is only in groups.

Then there's the death camp in Auschwitz / Oswiecim. Well... I'd say think it over. It is an important place and one you should see... but also an utterly sad and depressing one. If you're going to Krakow for leisure and fun, better keep clear of the place. If you're for some deeper educational values - visit it.
