The cycle will perpetuate, but I think we need to raise the minimum wage. I really don't think that people would get a fair shake if there was no minimum. Most companies are ruthless when it comes to the bottom line.

If the minimum wage goes up and companies hire fewer people, then more people will be out of work and fewer people will be able to buy the products those companies produce. Eventually, they'd have to cave and hire more people (at the higher minimum wage) in order to stimulate the economy enough for people to buy their products.

The vicious cycle can bite the corporate butt, too.

What we need to do is keep jobs in America. We need to find a way to keep businesses from going overseas to have their products made. The cheap labor in countries without minimum wages or protections like OSHA is what is killing American jobs. If it wasn't so cheap to go overseas or over the border, then companies wouldn't bother and jobs would stay in the U.S.

The only problem with raising the minimum wage is that inflation will rise above its regular 2-3% per year. Because businesses have to pay their workers more, they will raise the price of their goods, and because they raise the price of their goods it will be harder for minimum wage workers to get by even at the new minimum wage. Having a minimum wage just perpetuates the inflationary cycle. If there was no minimum wage, workers would still get a fair amount because nobody will work for a company that doesn't offer fair compensation, but there would be less inflationary pressures.

I think it is long over due. Too many companies have, for far too long taken advantage of peoples' plight. I think that paying a bunch of people such low wages allows the big dogs at the top to pocket more of the profit while the little guy starves. No one, not even a street person can live on minimum wage.

It only has been passed with the Republicans, not the Democrats yet AND they coupled it with a bill that gives the 7500 wealthy families in America an estate tax cut.... more than likely this bill will fail before we see the effects of it come to light. The Democrats aren't going to pass a bill for the wealthy. Check out the article below ...its from CBS News.

That's less than the minimum wage in the UK right now and personal debt over here is going through the roof. I guess inequalities in the distribution of wealth must be even more pronounced in the US than over here. Land of the Free or Land of Slaves?

It is about time. Inflation goes up 4-5 % a year, but minimum wage has been the same ten years. Go figure

Well for me...It means I'm going to have to let two of the teens I have working for me go.....at 6 bucks an hour...they just barely pay their own way working in my warehouse.

At 7 bucks or more an hour....I'm gonna let two of them go...and just demand more work out of the other two...or....let three go...and just offer the best worker of the four 12 bucks an hour to do the work of the other three. (which by the way...I used to do by myself a few years back....and I was 50 at the time. the work isnt all that hard,)

Economic theory suggests that minimum wages aren't good in the long run.

I don't think it will pass anyway because of the inheritance tax amendment.

I don't like it. Its just another reason for people to not go to college and get an education. If you can earn a decent living now, whats the point of trying to better yourself by going to college and getting an education.
