yes i have given money, we were walking home after a night of drinking in the pub and there was a homesless man being turned away from the 24 hour garage, he was only trying to buy a hot cup of coffee but they wouldn't serve him cos he was too scruffy and they said he smelt, so we bought him a coffee and some sandwiches and then i gave him a tenner. everyone needs a helping hand and if he wanted to spend it on alcohol, that's up to him, if i was homeless and i wanted to forget for a while, i would probably spend it on booze too, sometimes people need an act of kindness to remind them there is hope. they must feel so lonely.

i am not rich but i also donate £30 a month to animal charities, we need to help people and animals that are uable to help themselves.

Yes I have and I always will if I can, I have had friends who are homeless and I know that its a difficult situation for them, and most importantly not always the fault of the individual. Alot of people complain and say that homeless people spend all the money that they get on booze and so won't give money to them. But a friend of mine who had been homeless said that he did occasionally spend money that was given to him on alcohol, (although he always ensured his dog was fed first) because it kept him warm and helped him to sleep outside at night. This is a valid reason to me, not that I condone or approve of encouraging the abuse of alcohol, but what choice do some people have?

I have given a small amount to guys on the streets on very rare occassions---there is something about each time that I have done this though---something that I see in the situation that is special---hard to put a finger on just what--but I have to have a special feeling about the particular incident --- call it a sixth sense about the situation or whatever---I certainly don't go around tossing money at bums free gratis

I have given money to homeless people, simply as I believe I am helping them in my own small way. If we help each other, the world could be a better place for all

I also donate to charities, which I also recommend people do.

Yes. And one Christmas I took our local tramps a pair of gloves, a pair of socks and four cans of cider. These were proper tramps though, not the beggars who drive home in BMWs. Proper, British, hairy, holey tramps. Part of our culture!

No.

My belief is that you should give the money to the charities that help the homeless.

That way the charity gets the tax relief, the homeless get the help and you know your money will not be spent on alcohol or drugs.

I will by them food.

I will not by the big issue from any one wearing new £100 trainers!!!!!

No!
i DO agree with you about how we should help these people whenever we are in a position where we can help.
each of them has their own story/background and not all cases are bad and not all that has happened to them are their fault. so thats why in my opinion more ppl should help.
however, i help them in terms of donating my time and not by giving each of them random money. theres a charity organisation in the uk called shelter and they help homeless ppl. our student union has had two funraising event this year to raise money for them. that is how i prefer 'helping' them.
if i see one in town on the streets, i dont dig into my pockets for cash to giv to them, because research shows that (not all but) most of them would buy alcohol/drugs with it. i give them a sandwich, or if it is the winter, a nice cup of tea or coffee.

p.s But you know one time i saw a man with a really skinny dog, i felt so bad for both so i went to mcDonalds and bought a big mac meal, walked over to give it to him. he reached out his hand & before he took it of me he said "can't i have the money?"
!!!! i couldnt believe it was true what i was hearing.

i do if i think they wont spend it on booze or drugs. if they really do want it for food i dont mind at all.

most of the tramps in chesterfield are druggys or alcoholics that have been kicked out for not paying rent. i wont give it to people like them.

I have in the past, lots. I used to live in ********** where there are loads, I once gave one £95 as I felt rich compared to the poor sod, I sure could do with that 95 back right now
