Competitive swimming uses front crawl (AKA freestyle), Backstroke, Butterfly, and Breaststroke.

In addition to those strokes, many are taught sidestroke and elementary strokes for safety reasons. They are more passive strokes that use less energy. They are considered to be survival strokes because you don't get tired after doing them for a long time. Like breastroke, they consist of primarily one large thrust in the water. Women years ago would do elementary backstroke because that was the only way they could move in the water in their huge swimsuits (that would look like prom dresses nowadays).

Trudgen strokes are more or less defunct because they ruin the technique of all the current strokes, and inverted butterfly is usually classified as a crappy butterfly drill.

The major strokes are front crawl (freestyle), backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, side-stroke and elementary backstroke. These are the strokes recognized by the Red Cross as strokes taught by water safety instructors. There are also obscure stroke like the trudgen crawl, half trudgen, inverted butterfly.

Freestyle, Backstroke, Breastroke and Butterfly. Also, there is the IM or the Individual Medley, which is four laps of all the strokes, including different flipturns.
