my girl isnt into the typical pets...she likes exotic stuff and was asking me about getting a boa and some piranhas. i know nuthin about them. the piranha thing totally came outta nowhere but ive thought about getting a snake before. how much of an investment are they? are mice to feed them expensive? what about piranhas? if theyre gonna be a lotta money, id rather know sooner than later. what kind of pet does a snake make?

Depends on what kind of boa you get... rainbow boas only get 6 feet, red tails 8-10, sand boas 2-3 MAX, depending on gender... If you go with a snake try to get it on frozen/thawed food, you can buy frozen mice/rats for a FRACTION of the price of live food, and you don't risk the snake getting injured by its prey... I LOVE rainbow boas, and they're pretty unusual pets. It was my first snake (though I've cared for and worked with MANY before) and it isn't toooo difficult. The main worry is keeping the humidity high enough, but after they're a year or so old it's not as critical...

I have no idea about piranhas.
However, we have many Boas and they can be costly. Depending on the type of boa that you get, they can get up to 9-10 feet long and will need a large cage. And while mice to feed it while young will not be alot, can you and your girlfriend handle and afford feeding rabbits later? Some of our boas are only 3-4 feet long and are already eating baby rabbits. Can you or her throw in a cute, cuddly, fuzzy little baby bunny in the cage and listen to it squealing? You could do rats until the snake is larger, but rats can be very expensive. ($6-8 each) The snake will need to eat at least once every 2 weeks.
They do make good pets if you know how to care for them. Do your research. They need to be kept at at constant heat and humidity levels. Make sure you know what types of bedding are safe to use. Know when and when not to handle the snake.
If you know what you are doing, everything will be great.

Good Luck!

We have a piranha and 5 boas - we used to have 12 piranha but hear in lies the problem, without ample space they tend to eat each other - our lone piranha is happy now but its not a very nice display animal, tends to hide a lot - its generally recommended not to keep piranhas as pets as they are very high maintenance, and are illegal almost everywhere. As for boas, research very heavily and thoroughly into what type of boa you would like as some are very easy to keep (i.e. Common Boa) whereas some are very difficult (i.e. Emerald Tree Boa). So make 100% sure you know what your doing before getting one of these...and forget the piranha...bad idea...

i have a red tail boa (named ruby) i wouldn't get one cuz your gf wants one, they are like any pet a long term investment. the good thing is they do not require as much attention as a dog or a cat. the draw backs are that most people won't come in your house1 do research b-4 you buy you don't want to be 1 of the idiots that release them in2 the wild when they get 2 big. also some snakes can become aggressive when they become full grown. your best bet as a first time snake owner would b a ball python. they don't get crazy long and r good tempered just DO THE RESEARCH!!!!!!! MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU R GETTING INTO. good luck

Piranhas aren't illegal in the U.S. Oscars also eat live food, they're cool, or Jack Dempseys. And they shouldn't be terribly expensive, at most $15 each. Depending on size.
Get the fish, snakes are harder to care for. I hate it when people get animals they don't know how to care for. I lost a snake just after I got him because the people who I got him from didn't do the research and it was too late by the time I got him. I refuse to breed my female (who was to be his mate) because of that experience.
Get the fish!

Boas I've heard alot about. But Piranhas are illegal in some states, so even though they are alot of money, you may want to check your state laws.

relies upon the place you reside. they are unlawful in many countries / states. yet while they are criminal on your section, then confident you may keep them. only be conscious that they're a coaching fish, so retaining one would be very aggravating, shy and un-magnificent. a team of 6 person piranha needs a minimum of a 6ft (125gal) fish tank. they are no longer particularly a beginner fish.
