They are all the same, come out of the same pipeline, refiners put in 10,000 gallons in the pipeline in Texas or Louisiana, trucks unload 10,000 gallon in New York, who knows what refinery it came from.

It is all the same.

NO!
Gasoline is produced by different companies. the additives like ZX1000 and junk like that is why there are 50 stations on one corner. If one were actually better than another you would know about it and theirs would cost more....AMOCO thinks theirs is better but it's al the same. Phillips and Conoco joined a few years back. My town has 3 Conocos and one Phillips. all the same gas as well as the Shell which used to be Texaco....It's all in the percetion of what you want for your car. Now on the other hand if Billy Bob's fuel tanks are 50 years old and full of deposits and water, then HIS fuel only would be bad which might make one believe that the brand. say Mobil is bad but it is really Bily Bobs maintenace of his tanks that sucks.

By law, all gasolines are required to meet certain minimum federal guidelines, so in that respect, all gas is created equal. HOWEVER, what makes one gas "better" than another depends on several things, Octane rating for one, additives such as detergents, ethanol percentage, and others like Techron. Probably the single most important factor is the condition of the underground tanks, is there water, rust, dirt etc sitting in the bottom waiting to be sucked out and pumped into your ride? Say for instance there are two Exxon stations on opposing corners (such as they have in DC) both get their fuel from the same refinery, delivered by the same truck on the same day, but one station is twenty years older than the other, so 20 years of rust dirt and water have collected in their tanks, so in this case, the other station has "better" gas. As far as TOP TIER, four auto makers have set guidelines for a higher detergent gasoline, currently produced by few companies. (GM, BMW, Honda & Toyota) for more information see http://www.car-groups.com/goto/359791/Top_Tier_Fuel.html#msg_359791

I haul gasoline for a living. You'd be surprised how much Marathon gas is pumped by other "brand" name gas stations. Same with BP etc etc. There are only a handful of refineries in this country and they pretty much all connect to the same pipelines. Figure it out. Same with motor oil. I haul Kendall 10W-30 out of the same tank that Mobil comes from etc etc.

As a result of problems caused by poor gas quality they have recently come up with a category called "Top Tier" in order to qualify all three grades must pass the requirements not just premium.

Chevron is one of the best.

Citgo, for example, is provided by the Venezualan government, and the profits are used to fund feeding stattions for the poor. And there are a lot of profits, considering how little gas costs in Venezuala. (less than $0.20 per gallon!)
