Physical is just the beginning. Verbal and mental abuse are just as harmful. Actually, for me, I think the verbal and mental are more painful. Physical wounds heal, the emotional pain can stay with you forever. If you are in an abusive relationship please get out! I lived that life for a very long time. No one deserves to be hit or humiliated. Good luck.

There are different degrees of both physical and mental abuse. Verbal falls under mental. Depending on the exact details of any incident determines the degree of abuse, but most require jail time. Mental abuse is the hardest of the two to prove as it not clear cut evidence and who did it, and did it actually occur. The severity of mental abuse is also hard to determine, as different people view the same incident with different opinions. Also what you claim might be abuse may not well be in the eyes of the law. Abuse of a couples finances is classified as an idiot but is not legally abuse, per se. Police will arrest on most physical abuse charges, but will usually refer mental abuse cases to the proper authorities. Hope this helps

Domestic abuse can take several forms. Since children cannot defend them selves it has a much wider definition for them. If children are present when an adult is physically abused it may constitute abuse of them as well - especially if it endangers them. Neglect is one category of abuse. This is especially true if it invilves an elderly, disabled, incapacitated or otherwise defenseless person.
Some kinds of abuse may not be persecuted legally but are damaging. Constant derision, putting someone down, cussing, undercutting someones confidence and self esteem, ridiculing, and such things eventually can damage self esteem. If this occurs there are many agencies that will help with counseling to improve your personal strength and can teach a person to deal with this kind of abuse effectively. There is much to learn.
Physical abuse, hitting, shoving, stealing, placing another person in danger due to wreckless behaviors or use fo illegal substances is surely neglect. Again, the law may not prosecute thees behaviors if an adult allow themselves to be treated this way and does not press charges when the incidents occur.
The best way to deal with this is to get counseling and educate yourself. There are reasons, often very deep seated reason why people allow themselves to be treated in these ways. There are healthy ways to change these situations. People in these situations needs a lot of support, education and assistance to break the cycle.
Abuse is not OK and there are many resources to help. You have to make the calls. Start with your church or local mental health or abuse agencies who help people break these cycles.

Financial, sexual, emotional abuse. A man that keeps putting his family in tremendous debt is considered abusive too. Alot of people don't think of it that way.
