whatis.com is a good source for a complete answer.

However, in short there is a screen covered with phosphorous. Behind the screen, is an electron gun that emits an electron beam. There is a magnetic "yoke" that directs the beam.

The beam starts at the top of the screen and pulses the electrons across, then the the next line, then next line, to the bottom, at different intensities to produce a picture. This excites the phosphorous, which stays illuminated enough, for the process to start again. The different intensities produce the picture.

I hope this helps.

If it is an old CRT or cathode ray tube set, there is basically a laser gun inside that shoots a beam of electrons at the screen. Depending upon how an electron hits the pixel on the screen creates the colors. There are also magnets inside which direct the beam from (when looking from the outside) the top left across row by row to the bottom right then starting again. By doing this more than 60 times per second, our brain is not fast enough to detect the changing images and we see what appears to be seamless moving pictures.
With the new LCD TVs, it's all about electrical current going through liquid crystals like in your digital watch. Haven't researched enough yet about plasma tvs.

Best to check via Google or Wikipedia. A full answer is far too long to enter here -- it's not difficult, but there is a lot going on.

It works in a way that second plan persons look larger than ones in the first plan. Seriously. Such projection.
