Not sure what context this was in, but the term is more complex than mere conceit. Since Madam Bovary (Flaubert) was a highly sexed individual, and without much choice in the matter even though she knew that it would lead to her downfall, she is an example of the the "free will" debate of the time of the story.

Bovaryism is the conduct of life activites, particularly worldly delights, despite the negative consequences-according to Flaubert.
