Since 2 weeks ago my case was giving some crancking sounds. Thought it was the CPU Cooler but the sounds came from the hard-drive. I know it makes some sound, but crancking like sounds? every time I boot after 15 seconds. And keeps doing it whenever it wants. Not a regular pattern. Is my Hdd dying? I have a WD 2500JD. And I have it for about half a year. SHould I be worried?

I know the CD-ROM spins up at boot, this is not the problem.

Copy all of your data files to a DVD NOW! Your data files are all the files that YOU created. Pictures, word documents, and the like! Buy a new hard drive NOW! Use your computers users’ guide to install it into your computer.

Assemble all of the CDs that came with your computer. You should have a Motherboard CD, Operating System CD - Windows XP or 98. You should have a CD that came with your printer. If you do not have a CD for Windows XP or 98 or what ever Windows that is installed on your system, you should go to
WWW.directron.com or www.newegg.com and purchase Windows XP Home Operating System. I suggested, "HOME version because I do not know the age or capability of your system” You need to have this software to fix your computer without wasting money to pay for this. YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF!!!!!!!!

When you have your new hard drive connected, put your Windows disk into your cd/dvd drive and start your computer.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

If you are not comfortable installing the new hard drive, then open the case, (with the power turned off and the power cord disconnected from the computer). Unplug one wire at a time from the hard drive in your computer case and plug that wire to your new hard drive. You cannot make a mistake because each wire has a different shaped connector and will only fit in the right connector place on any hard drive.

Make sure that you do not touch any of the circuit board on the bottom of the new hard drive. It is ok for it to hang outside of the case for now.

You may just be hearing your CD Rom drive. The CD Rom will spin up to speed at boot-up to look for a disc, and then it will also look for a disc whenever you open My Computer or open an "Open File" dialog box. Some CD Roms will make loud crancking sounds. Usually, if a HDD is making sounds that loud, it is already dead and it won't boot-up.

Yes, The bearings are making noise in your drive, leave it up and buy another drive or move your important data over to another hard drive. I would look into a usb external hard drive, many times they come with software to backup files to it. While WD drives do make this noise more than others, the bearing thing could halt the drive and you will be SOL.

Western Digital is a good brand but they make alot of drives so they do sell some bad ones. But they have good warranty coverage. Don't take a chance. Back up your docs and send it in for a warranty replacement while it's still covered. They might even offer you an upgrade for a little bit more money. Just tell them it doesn't work... don't tell them it sounds funny.

cranking sound may be just of the drive head reading the drive. all HDD will become louder and louder when they age. the longer you have it the louder it became. if you really are worried, backup all your stuff, send the HDD back to your vendor and claim your warranty on manufacturer's fault. else you can just carry on with your life as usual. if you feel uncomfortable with loud HDD noise, i would advice u getting a Seagate HDD next time. i've been using Seagate in all my PC for 7 years and i have no complain on them, in terms of noise. they are extremely quiet u won't even notice there's 1.

wether or not the drive is dying i do not know, but i certainly wouldnt like a hdd that is making loud noises like your describing, my suggestion is to immediatly back up your data, and be ready to buy another or get another on guarantee.

consider yourself lucky that your drive is at least giving you warning signs, the last WD drive i had to replace literally went BANG (a chip actually blew off somehow!!, with burn marks around it, lost all my data that was on it.)

If you are sure it is the HD then back up now if you haven't already and get ready to replace it. It is possible though that it is just a loud HD. I have noticed different noise levels from different manufacturers over the years. Just remember that it is not a question of if your HD will fail, but when.

YES! Backup your info ASAP. I had a WD harddrive and they SUCK! My drive started cracking and then it died. I found out that it is physical damage on the drive.

Something with the needle when accessing the sectors. Good Luck.

WD doesn't make very good HDDs I recently had one die on me. You might want to consider backing up your files just in case. Clicking doesn't mean it is dying though, all HDDs make noises.
