make sure you start studying as early as possible. That way you can do small amounts at a time. I find reading difficult material to be had to focus on because its 1) difficult and 2) boring. If you start early then you can take time to learn it and if only doing small amounts at a time, you wont feel so frusterated with it. Start with what you do know, then work up to the harder stuff so you can make sense of it. Take some notes while your at it. If your writing while reading then you get a break from reading and you can then study off your notes rather then reading the text books all over again. Take breaks in between too. Don't study more then 30minutes to an hour without stopping for a little break.

Go out with friends or do something fun before you study. This way you won't get bored and lose focus.

Or take breaks to keep your mind fresh.

Works for me at least.

I suggest you take notes AS YOU READ. When you have problems focusing, get up and walk around or get something to drink, etc. Then consult your outline/notes before you start to read again.
