I know its ok to use one another in a practical sense like shop keepers and so on but why do people who are meant to be friends (and are still friends) have a tendency to be mercantile about relations. I thought people were supposed to ends in themselves, not means to an end.

in our capitalist, venturistic society, ppl learn to be individualistic, materialistic and competitive. we are a society that does not seek to strengthen humanistic values, but one of achieving as much material wealth as we can in a short period of time, for a long time. at what cost (lost of friendship) and to what means (using one another) is irrelevant in this mission.

It's a survival mechanism. People will naturally pick and choose, along with arranging things to justify their choice. If they didn't hedge their bets that way, they would be pushing their luck. "People will always choose the path of least resistance."

I don't think it's meant to be selfish in most cases, I think people gradually tend to rely on others to meet their needs as long as it "works".
