I just noticed that my petstore is selling clams to filter the water in the fishtank. I was wondering how well this worked, do the clams need to be fed ( the saleslady said no) and how long they lived. Also is a 1/2 gallon tank with one betta be big enough to support a clam. Any comments would help me decide Thank you

It works well in the wild, whether you talking about freshwater clams, or cleaner clams, or the real nice looking ones in saltwater they all basically do the same thing. they are filter feeders, and feed on Phytoplankton, or algae spores, which in turn keeps the water real clear. Clams do not need to be fed, however they are filter feeders, so if you have a mechanical filter than the poor old clam will have nothing to eat, and it will starve to death in your tank and die, Causing problems for you and your fish companions. Clams require low nitrates, and fish who will not nibble on their mantle, something that some curious fish likes to do. A half gallon tank will not support a clam, for there is not enough particles in a half gallon to feed it, Not to get into specifics, in general there are ways to feed a clam, but i do not think the hassle is necessary for a betta in a half gallon. :)

Bettas are freshwater - what are the clams? I don't think one fish is going to produce enough particulates for the clam to live on. Are invert foods out there for filter feeders, but you got to be cautious about over-feeding. Also can use micro algae pastes or cultures.
