My mom has a Compaq computer, which is about three years old. In the time she's had it, she's "wiped the hard drive" I'd say over 20 times. She insists that this doesn't do any harm to it, but I've heard otherwise. Any computer experts out there know if it does indeed damage the harddrive in the long run?

Well kinda. When you are formating a drive you can sometimes start getting bad sectors on the drive. This will cause data problems in the future.

Why does she format so often?

It doesn't necessarily harm the drive but it most certainly does shorten the life of the drive because it is being put through extra work that it shouldn't have to do. While reformatting your drive on a regular basis is recommended, I do it once a year. She shouldn't be doing it that much and I would not recommend ANYONE do it that much. Tell her to stop, tell her it will eventually break the drive, if that will get her to stop doing it. Just get her TO STOP doing it. It's definitely bad for the longevity of the drive, that I can tell you. And please tell me she doesn't constantly turn the computer on and off, that's bad for it also, for the hard drives and everything else.

It sounds as though there is a recurring problem which isn't really being addressed. Just wipe everything and start over.

If you have a problem with virus or spyware infection you should install good antivirus and spyware protection. There are free utilities available, which, even if they are not the best available, are very good.

I would recommend Avast antivirus and Spybot Search and Destroy.

No, reformatting creates no matters in case you do it rightly. the only subject which you will probable desire to re-reformat ought to be in case you do no longer allocate sufficient room for the ccontinual, or the 1st partition ( as living house homestead windows does not enable you to make better partition length). diverse than for it I even have by no skill experienced any ingredient lacking after reformatting and reinstallation. optimal probable you're reformatting for the incorrect motives. And as nicely you're truly no longer doing formatting to the quantity to be risky to the perplexing disk, nor you will ever ought to desire to end that.

yeah it would be fine, i suspect it would take about 1000 formats to even cause any problem.
as long as they scandisk and defrag the machine every 1-2 months the hard drive will be fine.
