A 95 4 Runner is worth around 5 to 6000. Its probably gonna be around 3000 by the time you get a used engine and get it put in. If its the same type of engine you will most likely have the same problem. If you fix it (new head gasket) and trade it that would probably be the cheapest way to get out from under it. According to Consumer Report the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Outback or Forester are the best used buy for the money. You can get into a 2000 Forester for about 10 G's and a 2000 CR-V for about the same or a little more. They both score very high in reliability. I own a Forester and really like it. I test drove a RAV-4 and it rode like a lumber wagon.

Toyota did have problems with that V6 motor, however if your car has blown three sets of gaskets it sounds like your heads or block is warped. This happens when the car gets to hot. If this is the case it would be cheaper in the long run to find a different car. Call a couple of Independent Toyota shops and ask them how much ti look at your car and give you an estimate on repairs.
Toyota changed the gasket design and the new style very seldom blows again that why I think you have other problems.

I can't recommend which car you should buy, but sure if to try fixing the present car it would be pure wastage of money. There is drastic difference between company fitted engines & local workshop fitted engines. Engine mounting cant be done that well by the workshops, you may hear certain noises, vibrations or come across strange issues. The body of the car is also old it may also require maintenance now & then.
Further, incase you plan to resell your car you may find it difficult to extract the price of the new engine from the buyer. Therefore, better go for a new one, may be some small economical variant.

If it's still in warranty from the last repair, then I would go to another Toyota dealer and show them my warranty repair paperwork and try to get it fixed. If not, I'd ask them to give me a good deal on a used Toyota Corolla because I was a long time Toyota customer.

A new engine would be cheaper than buying a new car! Go to the salvage yard and price one. You shouldn't need anything on it, just the engine and ecu.
