You could use any alcohol but be sure to use only a little and use your finger. My dad and I tried it on my oldest niece on a Qtip once, and she sucked all the alcohol from it before we could get it to the gums. My mom was really good at it.

No, absolutely not. Alcohol kills brain cells. There are many great products on the market now like baby oragel and baby anbesol that will numb their gums and leave their brain cells functioning. Our grandparents did not have access to cheap over the counter medicines to numb our parents gums so they did use alcohol. Besides, if you think a teething baby is bad, try a teething baby with a hangover.

Not the best choice as a teething remedy. Depending on the age of the child there are teething rings or other items that you can use. They can be chilled (not frozen) and offer relief to itchy hot gums as the teeth are cutting through. I also used baby washcloths that I first soaked in really cold water and wrung out - my sons were happy to chew, gnaw, and pull on these while they went through that teething stage. Never leave a child alone with one of these devices though as they should always be supervised.
Best of luck during the teething process and take care.

In the 'good old days' before Bonjela it was considered OK to rub whiskey or rum onto babies gums. Yes it would numb them and the taste would probably confuse them and stop them grizzling.

Try baby anbesol or baby orajel instead. My doctor always suggested giving infant advil or motrin - not tylenol - for teething. It is an anti-inflammtory and helps their swollen little gums feel better.
Good luck!!

Yes. Just dip your finger in it and rub her gums. She'll bite down, but it doesn't hurt at all. I rather enjoyed it, knowing that it made her feel better. I got the impression that she enjoyed the flavor.
And since she is now 25 years old, and NOT alcoholic, (I don't think she drinks at all) it didn't do any harm.

Its an old remedy and does work to a point, but its not safe. Go to your drug store or local health store and get hylands teething tablets. Works better than anything else Ive tried.

My parents used tincture of opium on my baby brothers gums. The doctor recommended it. He is now a science teacher. Didn't seem to hurt him.

yeah um, ice also works pretty good too. Rum has a bad taste, even for an adult. Why in the hell would you put that in your childs mouth?
