I think that "lap swimming" just means that you are swimming laps in the pool. Or going the length of the pool and then back, to the starting point, is a lap.

Lap swimming is what you do in a swimming pool. When you swim from one end of the pool to the other, you have swum a length. When you swim from one end to the other, then back again, you have swum a lap. So one lap equals two lengths. Most pools are 25m or 50m long, so you can decide how far you want to swim when you are training for a race. Most swimmers do from 50 to 100 laps a day when they are training.
Hope this explains it sufficiently.

"Lap swimming" means that you are swimming from one end of the pool to another. This distance is usually 25 meters. "lap swimming" is when you do this many times, usually for exercise.
